The biggest problem I ran into was dealing with the Kernel Density function. I'm running a local student version, which should have included the Spatial Analyst extension but it doesn't appear to be working properly. My solution was to copy my mxd and results database back to the terminal server, use the Kernel Density function there and then return the results to my local. This worked fine until working my final maps on Auto Theft. It appears that maybe my results db became corrupt and I was only able to symbolize DC_Streets on the first dataframe. For the other three, the very same SQL statement as was used on the first frame, produced syntax errors on the other three.
